The clip is forty-four seconds of a physicist reading from a list of his
own dead certainties. Nobody made him keep it. Nobody made him read it
in front of the man whose product proved one of its entries wrong. That
list is the whole lesson, and it is why this card opens the AGI lane.

1. THE TOPIC — what AGI is, and why it isn't here

AGI — artificial GENERAL intelligence — is not "a chatbot that talks
well." Deutsch's distinction, held for decades: general intelligence
means creating NEW explanations — seeing a problem, guessing, criticizing,
testing — not retrieving or recombining what's already known. The live
question of the AI age is whether today's systems are early AGI or
something else that merely sounds like it. Everyone has an opinion.
Deutsch has a filing system.

2. WHAT HE SAYS — the ledger, verbatim

Asked to detail his supposed disagreement with Altman, he first declines
the fight the moderator built for him — "Well, I don't care about that.
I just don't have a disagreement" [01:33] — and then opens the file:

"On my computer I keep a list of progress that has been achieved
where I had previously been sure that it wasn't yet possible.
One of
the items I'm embarrassed to admit was the worldwide web. Another
was that I thought that no computer program would be able to sustain
open-ended conversation on general subjects in natural language unless
that program was an AGI… ChatGPT proved me wrong. It's not an AGI
and it can converse.
" [01:40–02:24]

Count what happened in one breath: a written record of his own failed
predictions, an admission of embarrassment, a named falsification — and
the distinction STILL standing, because what broke was his prediction
about conversation, not his definition of generality. Conversation, it
turned out, "was a side effect of another [thing], namely knowledge"
[02:29]. He updates the map without burning the compass.

3. WHY THIS IS LAWS 4 AND 3, HELD

Law 4 — Uncertainty Observer-Local — as a filing habit. Most
speakers hedge with words. Deutsch runs uncertainty as INFRASTRUCTURE: a
standing ledger where reality gets to overrule him in writing. "Proved
me wrong" is the rarest verb in the genre — the Musk card one lane over
shows the usual direction, hedges decaying into asserts under pressure.
Here pressure runs the other way: the assert ("not yet possible")
decayed, and the man filed it. Later in the tape the same discipline
fires twice more: "Nothing can program a computer to have such
intuitions" — beat — "yet." [06:03], a universal negative scoped by
a one-word sentence.

Law 3 — Description Is Layered — is his whole argument. Chatting is
one layer; knowledge is another; creating new explanations is a third —
and evidence for one is not evidence for the next. That's why he holds
"It's not an AGI AND it can converse" without contradiction, and why his
criterion for minds is the STORY of a creation — "we know [Einstein]
created it because we know his story, what problems he was addressing
and why" [05:32] — the layer beneath the artifact. Behavior can be
faked; problem-situations leave biographies.

4. THE MEME THAT INVERTED HIM

The headlines say Altman and Deutsch "proposed a quantum-gravity
benchmark for AGI
" — that the father of quantum computing "agreed" to
a test. On tape, Deutsch argues the opposite for five straight minutes:
Turing "never proposed a test or benchmark for AGI" [03:14]; "there
can be no benchmark
because to be general, an AGI must be capable of
choosing to remain silent" [03:31]. What actually happened at [06:31]:
Altman — who says on tape "I appreciate that you keep a list of things
you were wrong about. I do too" — builds a scenario where GPT-8
solves quantum gravity AND "could tell you its story of how it did
it and the problems it was thinking about and why." Deutsch: "I think
it would. Yeah.
" He didn't adopt Altman's benchmark. Altman adopted
Deutsch's story criterion and hung a physics trophy on it. The
circulation kept the trophy and deleted the story — the same compression
that turned Bostrom's trilemma into Musk's "two options." Drift has one
knife; it only ever cuts the condition.

5. THE LESSON — keep the list

You cannot audit your own beliefs by feel; feel is what asserted the
World Wide Web was impossible. Write the confident claim down. Date it.
When reality rules, file the ruling — especially the embarrassing ones,
ESPECIALLY in public, most of all in front of the person who proved you
wrong. The list does two jobs at once: it keeps your future asserts
honest, and it is the only certificate of intellectual solvency that
can't be faked on stage. One man in this lane scored 58 because his
hedge fell off under pushback. This one scores 30 because he built a
place for his hedges to live.

Roster context: Deutsch opens AGI LANE 01 at PASS 30 — one point above
the Aiello floor (29), below Gates (31). One clip per speaker: this is
his. Altman's presence is gravity, not a verdict; his card waits for his
own tape.
